Football's most expensive teenagers and what happened next – Mbappe to follow Rooney, Ronaldo and Ramos?

A precocious talent at Everton, Man United won the race for an 18-year-old Rooney in the summer of 2004. He cost £25.6m, and even Sir Alex Ferguson admitted ‘there were plenty of eyebrows raised’ when he made the decision to offer such a fee for a teenager. But Rooney paid it back, and then some. It appears Kylian Mbappe’s drawn-out move to Paris Saint-Germain is finally set to be completed.
The Monaco teenager’s world class displays last season caught the eyes of a number of clubs and he has been the subject of interest from, Real Madrid and Arsenal as well as PSG throughout the summer.
And it seems the French giants have won the race for his signature, with various reports claiming Mbappe, 18, will spend the season on loan in the capital, with PSG having an obligation to buy him for £166million next summer.
That fee would make Mbappe the second most expensive player in world football, and by far the most expensive teenager in the history of the sport.
But what has happened to some of the other most expensive teenage signings? Click the right arrow, above, to find out the career trajectories of former big-money teens…
